Engineering Case Studies That Bring Ideas to Life

Engineering case studies help put ideas into context. They show how designs move from the drawing board into real-world use, and what it takes to make them work reliably.

By sharing these stories, Weber Knapp highlights the value of practical problem solving. Each case study offers insight into how careful engineering can meet challenges and deliver results.

When Hestan set out to launch a pro-grade residential grill line, they needed a better way to hold open a heavy lid without sacrificing one hand.

Weber Knapp engineered a sleek counterbalance hinge that offered smooth, one-hand operation and matched Hestan’s high design standards.

Industry: Outdoor & Professional Kitchen

To help Artone reimagine hotel room design, Weber Knapp created a counterbalance hinge system for a vertical Murphy bed with a built-in desk. The solution made the unit safe, smooth to use, and stylish enough for modern hospitality spaces.

Imaging equipment had a 147 lb lid that was unsafe for operators to lift. Weber Knapp used custom in-house software to ‘stack’ springs in parallel – within a tight space – to deliver smooth, stable counterbalance motion.

Industry: Medical

When Sub-Zero wanted a refrigerator that disappears seamlessly into cabinetry, Weber Knapp delivered. We engineered a concealed hinge under ¾″ tall that supports a 143-lb door, resists sag, and still works flawlessly after over 300,000 cycles.

Industry: Appliance

Restaurants and bars across the globe are starting to rethink the ergonomic design of their eating and social spaces to make them more accessible for employees and customers alike. King’s Fish House has been redesigning its seafood houses to incorporate flip-up bar counters, and Weber Knapp has been able to help!

Applied Materials needed a safer counterbalance for a heavy vacuum chamber lid mid-production. Weber Knapp retrofitted a robust Vectis spring-hinge solution using CAD collaboration and rapid prototyping – now deployed worldwide in Class 1000 cleanrooms.

Industry: Industrial

When ETS Tan asked Weber Knapp to develop an adjustable counterbalance hinge system to support a series of lids ranging in size and weight from 250lbs to 309 lbs for their new tanning bed line, Weber Knapp delivered. We able to develop a single unique counterbalance hinge that could manage the varying center of gravity locations and weights for the entire tanning bed line.

Industry: Appliance

The Rotunda of the National Archives Building in Washington, D.C. needed a solution where custom hinges could be used to keep documents like the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights safe. Using its proprietary Vectis™ technology, Weber Knapp developed a hinge mechanism that would provide a safer and easy means to open and close the lids for maintenance.
